Romanian Opp Head: New Mgmt Of Public TV, Radio Cos Will Be Politically Controlled

Romania’s opposition social democrat head Victor Ponta on Monday said the future management of the country’s public television TVR and radio company SRR will be politically controlled, adding that democrat liberals and Hungarians in the ruling coalition will get hold of TVR and SRR, respectively.

Ponta stressed that all statements made so far by democrat liberal lawmaker Raluca Turcan and by other democrat liberal lawmakers regarding the "political burden" on the two public broadcasters are only valid when somebody else runs the country, not when they are in power.

Ponta underscored social democrats will strongly oppose any action meant to place the two companies under political control, even if they don't rejoice a parliamentary majority.

Ponta said social democrats haven't yet discussed their propositions for the managing boards of the public television and radio, but stressed that only professionals should be appointed.

The Parliament's plenary meeting meant to discuss the activity reports of the TVR and SRR was suspended last week and talks will be resumed Tuesday.

If lawmakers reject the activity report of TVR, then, the managing board of TVR, currently run by Alexandru Sassu, will be replaced. Prominent figures like Rodica Culcer, Robert Turcescu, Valeriu Turcan, Florin Calinescu and Brandusa Armanca have been floated as potential candidates for the position of CEO of the national television.
