Moldovan said the Government plans on seeking two separate confidence votes in Parliament, one for pension cuts and one for wage cuts. Consequently, according to no-confidence motion debate procedures, voting might extend for two days. In order for both votes to be annulled, the Social Democratic Party will have to submit two separate no-confidence motions.

Moldovan added that the motions will be initiated by social democrats, and will have three annexes, containing alternative measures submitted by the Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party, respectively.

Romania, which has been hit by the deepest recession in at least 20 years, has pledged to bring the budget deficit to 6.8% of the gross domestic product under the terms of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan agreed last year. The Government this weekend adopted two draft laws that make up its austerity measures, which include reducing pensions by 15% and state employees' salaries by 25%.

The Government will seek a confidence vote in Parliament Monday afternoon for the two draft laws, Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana said Wednesday.

According to Romania's Constitution, if the Parliament approves a no-confidence motion submitted within three days of a confidence vote sought by the Government, the Cabinet is dismissed. If the Government is not dismissed, the draft law is officially adopted and the Government must assume full responsibility for enforcing it.
