Romanian President Lays Out Constitution Revision Propositions At Ruling Party Meeting

Democrat liberal vice-president Theodor Stolojan told MEDIAFAX the Constitution revision propositions presented by the head of state target provisions concerning referendum, the Parliament's prerogative to suspend the president and articles on fiscal responsibility and budget deficit.

Democrat liberal Sulfina Barbu said the president wanted to know if the party still supports the results of the referendum held in 2009, when Romanains voted to make the country's Parliament single-chamber and reduce the number of lawmakers.

She said Basescu wants the president to be elected to a four-year term again. Another Constitution revision proposition put forward by Basescu states that, if the Parliament suspends the president and people polled in an impeachment referendum decide to keep him in office, the Parliament will be dissolved.

According to Barbu, discussions also touched on the law regulating the partnership between the state and the Church in matters concerning social assistance, which has been approved by the Parliament early this month. The president said he will analyze the law and decide if he will promulgate it.

Earlier Sunday, president's spokesman Valeriu Turcan told MEDIAFAX Basescu accepted the Democratic Liberal Party's invitation for talks, and added discussions will focus on the Government's priorities.

People close to the matter said Friday that democrat liberal leaders were summoned on Sunday for talks on upcoming internal elections.
