Several Romanian County Councils To Take Over Decentralized Hospitals In Upcoming Weeks

The minister said, during a meeting with National Union of Romanian County Councils representatives, that the country's healthcare system needs to be improved, adding the decentralization of hospitals is one of the reforms meant to reorganize the sector.

The Health Ministry said in a press release Sunday that, after hospitals are decentralized, contests to fill management positions will be organized by administration councils in which local authorities will hold majority.

Cseke said recently Romania's Government decided, by an emergency decree, to eliminate 9,200 hospital beds and reduce by 577 the number of hospital manager jobs starting July 1, when 373 hospitals will also be transferred to local authorities.

The minister said hospitals will have at most three managers, considering some hospitals currently have as many as ten manager positions. According to Cseke, the Health Ministry will keep 62 healthcare units of national interest, namely public institutes, several regional emergency hospitals and certain hospitals with single areas of activity.
