Romanian PM Invites Unions, Employers To Talks On Labor Code After Failed Talks With Labor Min

Disgruntled with talks on the labor code, unions and employers called on the prime minister earlier Tuesday to fire the labor minister, saying he refuses to take social partners' propositions into account.

"There's no point in wasting any more time with a minister who doesn't consider the propositions of social partners," said Cartel Alfa union federation leader Bogdan Hossu.

The head of Romania's employers' association in industry UGIR-1903, Cezar Corici, said the new labor code bill targets the elimination of unions and employers' associations, which, he said, places Romania outside the principles of democracy.

The minister, in turn, said some employers agree with the ministry's proposed labor code, which the head of the Alliance of Employers' Associations in Romania, Dan Matei Agathon, confirmed.

"I think we can manage to take further steps today and have a final draft of the labor code by January 21 and the five laws regarding social dialog," said the minister.

Agathon, whose alliance represents nine employers' associations, said the ministry's proposed labor code is to be validated and is in line with recommendations of the International Labor Organization and the European Economic and Social Committee.
