More Than Half Of Romanians Have Lower Income Compared To 2009 – Survey

The survey shows 52% of Romanians in urban areas registered a decrease in income in 2010 compared to 2009.

If in the April-May period, only people aged over 35, with poor education, namely, skilled or unskilled workers, registered a decrease in income, things changed in the July-August period, with more people being affected by the decrease in income, among whom, people aged over 25, with average or low education and income.

The survey indicates, however, that, although more and more Romanians are affected by the economic crisis, people with high income and those with higher education remain, for the moment, the least affected by the crisis.

According to the survey, 66% of respondents, most of whom registered lower income, said they are in search of new income sources. To be able to cope with the decrease in income, 50% of Romanians cut costs with certain products and services, such as, food, utilities and vacations. Also, home appliances and clothes are no longer a priority for Romanians.

Furthermore, 29% of respondents said they are considering going to work abroad to make more money. This category mainly includes jobless people and those with low education or income. Only 14% of Romanians in urban areas said they were not affected by the economic crisis and things are getting better for them.

The survey was conducted in the July- August 2010 interval, on a sample of 800 respondents aged 16 to 64, living in urban areas.
