Reform Is Needed In High School Curricula – Romanian Pres

Romanian president Traian Basescu said Wednesday on national radio station RRA, that the number of classes in high schools needs to be decreased, and this means many teachers will lose their jobs, "because a large percentage of teachers are of poor quality."

He said in some high schools the kids take seven to eight classes every day, which is “too much”. The president added some of the ninth graders have to study 16 subjects, some tenth graders 17 subjects and some eleventh and twelfth graders 13 subjects.

The head of state said there needs to be a curriculum reform, which would include less classes and subjects.

Asked if in these conditions there will be teachers unemployed, Basescu said some of them will lose their jobs.

"Some of them will lose their jobs because there is a high percentage of teachers of doubtful quality, who have no business teaching, which can be seen in the performance and life failures of children," Basescu said.

The president added, however, that for skilled teachers of obsolete subjects, there is the option of retraining, which is backed by European funding.

In addition, Basescu said the curriculum reform needs to consider the training interests of beneficiaries.

Basescu concluded saying this will be achieved in time, not “overnight”.
