Romanian Democrat Liberals, Christian Democrats Signed Protocol To Back President For Reelection

The announcement was made by the leaders of the two parties, democrat liberal Emil Boc and Christian democrat Marian Petre Milut, who said the protocol was unanimously adopted by the democrat liberals' standing office.

Boc said the political alliance protocol is based on the fact that the two parties have a common root in the European People's Party.

Boc added the two allied parties aim to reform the country and another common political objective is to back Basescu for a second term as president.

Boc also said the protocol is a first step toward future political partnerships such as parliament and local elections in the years to come.

Milut said the protocol represents a step forward for his party, adding the party will back Basescu and will be involved in his election campaign.

Asked if the party's other wing, which leans toward liberals will agree with the protocol, Milut said it has have the right to contest it. Liberal leader Crin Antonescu said recently his party has signed a political alliance protocol with the Christian Democratic People's Party wing led by Radu Sarbu to back him in the upcoming presidential elections, and the protocol will be followed by an electoral alliance for future elections.

Milut asked Antonescu to denounce "the so-called protocol" between liberals and Christian democrats and said the document is null and signing it is illegal.
