Romanian Pres Discusses Bucharest City Hall Candidates, Chooses Favorite

Romanian president Traian Basescu said on television station B1 Tv that Vasile Blaga, the democrat liberal candidate for Bucharest city hall, will "pulverize" Miron Mitrea, whose name is mentioned as social democrat candidate for the same position.

Asked what would happen in case of a faceoff in Bucharest between Blaga and Mitrea, Basescu answered: "Blaga pulverizes Mitrea."

"I am saying this because I know Blaga. Blaga is a focused guy. If he has his task, he is like a bulldog," said the head of state.

He added Blaga will not hesitate to engage in wide projects for Bucharest if he is convinced that this is the right solution.

On the other hand, Basescu stated, before commenting on Blaga and Mitrea, that he does not wish to get involved in the electoral campaign, calling on the candidates to stop taking shots at him.

"If they do not want me in the campaign, they should stop attacking me," Basescu said, adding that those who attack him "will never get to be presidents."

He said that his patience has limits.

Basescu said, however, after referring to Blaga and Mitrea, that he only approached the subject because he had been posed a question regarding the matter.
