Almost 75% Of Romanian Minors Who Use Internet Receive Sexual Messages - Studies

Three quarters of Romanian children aged between six and 17 use the Internet, 60% of them are contacted by pedophiles and 24% receive sexual messages, according to two studies presented by "Save the Children" and Focus, on Safer Internet Day.

Patrick Danilevici, communications manager for the Romanian Center for Missing and Sexually Exploited Children - Focus, said there are over one million pornographic images of children on the Internet, and around 200 are uploaded daily. He said more than 75% of children aged 6-17 use the Internet, 60% of them are contacted by pedophiles and 40% answer these calls.

In Romania, more than 90% of teenagers socialize on the Internet, said Danilevici. Of this group, 18% say they send personal information to others online and 14% communicate with unknown people. Out of the total number of Romanian Facebook users (2,693,200), 14% are teenagers. The share of teenagers who use Facebook is 33% and growing, he said.

According to "Save the Children," there were 7.7 million Internet users in Romania at the end of 2010 and the number of Facebook users increased by 500% between January and December last year. The organization's data says 14% of Romanian minors are victims of harassment, 24% receive sexual messages and 22% reveal personal information.

On Safer Internet Day, Focus has unveiled the first kit for the reporting of illegal or harmful content, available on www.safernet.ro, allowing Internet users to contribute to a cleaner online environment.
