Romanian private individuals and companies can scrap their old cars and get a scrap bonus from the Government to buy new ones as of February 20, 2010 when Romania resumes its clunkers program, Prime Minister Emil Boc said Friday.
Romania has assigned a total RON228 million for the clunkers program in 2010.
Over 32,000 cars older than ten years were scrapped under the Romanian clunkers program in 2009, namely some two thirds of the overall number of vehicles the state targeted to scrap in the beginning of 2009.
The state spent a total 122,842,600 lei (EUR1=RON4.1397) on the clunkers program in 2009.
The government decided early 2009 to increase the number of cars that can be scrapped to 60,000 units, compared with 40,000 cars in 2008, and the scrapping bonus rose to RON3,800, from RON3,000.
In the summer of 2009, the government extended the clunkers program by allowing an unlimited number of cars that can be scrapped by private individuals and including light vehicles in the category of vehicles than can be purchased in exchange for scrapped cars.
